Chris’s Satyricon cartoon for the Portland Mercury

Portland Mercury asked Chris to make a cartoon illustrating some key moments in Satyricon history, specifically (they said) “Kurt meets Courtney at Satyricon” and “the men’s room trough.” (um…) I told Chris I thought he should also include the “Satyricon riot.” He said “ok” and came up with this later that day. It was published in last week’s Portland Mercury.

At the time, I was getting kind of tired of all the “Kurt & Courtney” stuff the local media kept touting. There was so much going on there, and lots of Portland people doing interesting things — Walt Curtis, Gus Van Sant, and so many other poets, artists, bands.. and other couples too, some who are together to this day. But Kurt & Courtney, that’s what captures people’s imaginations. That’s the first thing they bring up. Is it even real?

So just before the big final blowout weekend, I was looking through David Ackerman’s photos of Nirvana’s first show there. (A few of the photos are online here.) It was in January 1989 and Nirvana was opening for Mudhoney, and there are lots of photos of the bands, and there is a photo of Courtney Love posing that night in front of Satyricon stage. Actually, the Willamette Week writers spotted the photo in a stack I gave them, and wanted to publish it, but we said “no” and David let them publish the picture below instead, which was taken a couple years before at an Obituaries and Napalm Beach show. And is really a more appropriate photo, because it shows a group of Portland women going to see some two of the same Portland bands who headlined the final Farewell Satyricon shows on October 30. And the women in the photo were also in Portland bands. Marti Wyman was in the Venarays, and Ursula Wehr was in Candy 500. Robin Bradbury is someone I’ve gotten to know this past year, a very beautiful and classy woman and cool music fan.

Satyricon could always be counted on to surprise me with some strange connection, and to test me in some way. That is part of why I loved the place, late as I came in the game. I would run into the old crowd every where I went, the poets, the crazies, the rock n’ roll artists.

It was a magical, dionysian energy vortex I couldn’t avoid. It became a part of me too. And it always will be.

Was cool. I found out that D.J. Rock Thrower went to school with my daughter’s uncle, and Tres Shannon offered a lot of history and anecdotes between sets. Also, a pink gorilla climbed up a tree outside the club.
