[PDX ROOTS MUSIC] Boo Frog is the Portland band that best pays tribute to both the Fuggs’ whimsical, poetic ’60s humor and Ween’s psychedelic mid-’90s silliness. Drenched in reverb-strewn low-fi credibility, Boo Frog eschews songwriting convention and puts its songs first. With members who’ve shared the stage with every punk band that mattered from Portland’s 1980s music scene—co-founder Chris Newman is perhaps better known for his work in Napalm Beach—Boo Frog knows the music is all that matters. Always independent, the band just released Better Than the Rest on vinyl in July of this year, followed shortly thereafter by the Undead at Satyricon live cassette. So if you want to see some real-deal musical history that the cool kids were into when you were just a pup, check Boo Frog out. [OLD DOGS, NEW TRICKS] Here’s a local music history lesson in one short evening. Mike Lastra and friends from Portland’s most longevous experimental act, Smegma, return to the stage as Dr. Amazon. Lastra will also lend his talented theremin wizardry to Boo Frog, the pleasantly primitive swamp-rock trio led by Chris Newman of Napalm Beach (and too many noteworthy others to name in this space). Jagula is a newer outfit from some former Hell Cows, a seminal ’80s act that appeared at the Mayor’s Ball and countless Satyricon bills. With Lauren K Newman’s improv metal duo Palo Verde topping things off, her status as an immortal Portland icon is all but sealed. NATHAN CARSON.

Joe Evans III Better Than The Rest review (Razorcake).

Kind of like some Black Keys stuff. A little Tom Waits-y. Alt-indie-blues, with what I can only think to call “world music” elements (even though that’s basically a crock). One singer also reminds me of Will from Grabass, which I like. I was a little skeptical at first, but it picks up as it goes on, and gets a bit spacey/trippy. Not that bad. — Joe Evans III
